According to its passenger traffic report for August 2019, London Heathrow Airport broke its all-time record for passenger traffic in a single day; on August 4th, approximately 262,000 passengers passed through the facility.
In the entire month of August, Heathrow served 7.7 million travelers, 0.1% higher than in the same month of 2018. Its total air transport movements ticked up by 0.6%. Matching the downward trend occurring throughout the air freight industry, cargo traffic at the airport fell 9.9%.
The airport’s press release emphasized how its African routes have contributed to the rise in passenger traffic; that sector grew 6% year-over-year. Recently, airlines have used larger aircraft for Nigeria-bound routes, and British Airways launched a new route to Durban, South Africa.
